The East Greenbush Education Foundation Community Leader Award recognizes and honors the efforts, achievements and positive impact of a community member in the East Greenbush Community. Tonight, we are here to honor the late Richard S Schwarz, J.D. for his many years of service to the East Greenbush community.
In his professional career, Rich was an attorney and lobbyist specializing in tax law for The Business Council of New York State. He served in this capacity for 32 years, retiring in 2007. Prior to this, he served as counsel to the New York State Senate Labor Committee. In addition, he was employed as an aeronautical engineer for Raytheon Technologies in Boston, Massachusetts from 1969-1970.
Rich’s volunteerism in the community was deep and diverse. Rich began his involvement with Greenbush Child Care, Inc. when he brought his son, Timothy, for after school care. He joined the GCC Board of Directors, and was elected as Treasurer in 1995. He held this position until his passing in August, 2022. Rich was affectionately referred to as a “financial whiz” or a “human calculator”. GCC staff described Rich as “instrumental” in helping them stay afloat through COVID-19. In their words, “ without Rich’s input, experience, counsel and constant dedication to drop everything in his personal life to help, GCC may have had a very different outcome financially, and the District’s families may have lost all that GCC has been able to offer over the past 40 years”.
Rich also spent many years supporting the Columbia All Sports Club. He was one of the original founding members in the early 2000’s, and he served as President for the last 20 years. He was instrumental in creating the Columbia All Sports Hall of Fame, and in executing the yearly selection process and planning the Induction Ceremony. He was the main contributor for the Athletic Hall of Fame Almanac. He was the announcing voice for the Varsity Boys Lacrosse Senior Night for many years. In addition, Rich participated in numerous fundraising efforts to support new score tables, fitness equipment, scoreboards, golf carts, banner signs and guest speakers. All Sports Vice President Marie McBride reflected that “ he approached all tasks as a true gentleman, allowing everyone to express their views, considered all, and was able to move the Club forward”. He approached his community involvement with much pride and professionalism. Rich serves as a role model for all who have the pleasure to work with him.” As the former Athletic Director, I believe that Rich “is a great example of school and community working together. His dedication and commitment to our Athletic programs, students and community will last forever”.
Rich was the recipient of the East Greenbush Central School District Volunteer of the Year in 2015-16. He received a commendation from the Rensselaer County Legislature for this honor. In his honor and memory, the East Greenbush Education is proud to present this award to the family of Richard Schwarz. We recognize his years of dedicated service, and are grateful for his unwavering commitment to the community.
